Are We Eligible For The Stimulus Check?

My husband and I both receive social security every month. We also get retirement each month. We did not file taxes in 2018 or 2019. Because we receive social security each month are we eligible for the stimulus check. Thanks

Hi,

I can only answer questions about Social Security benefits, not stimulus payments. You'll need to refer to IRS's website: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus-tax-relief-and-economic-impact-payments.

What Age Would I Have To Be To Collect Any Of My Husband's Benefits If Something Happens To Him?

I'm 42 years old & still work of course & my husband is 68 years old & retired. At these ages would I qualify for Survivor benefits if something happened to him & if not what age would I need to be to collect any of his benefits?

Hi,

Unless you have a qualifying child in your care, the earliest that you could be eligible for survivor benefits is age 60, or age 50 if you're disabled (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html). . . . Read More

Can I Draw Off Of My First Husband's Social Security If I've Remarried?

Hey Larry,
I was married to my 1st husband for 31 years. He died from a heart problem at age 51. I have remarried. Could I draw off his social security now that I am 61 years old.

Hi,

You could only qualify for survivor benefits on your first husband's record if you're either a) unmarried, or b) your current marriage took place when you were at least age 60.

How Long Before My Aunt Can Receive Benefits Again?

My aunt who is 77 years old inherited money from her brother's life insurance 6 years ago. Her SS Disability was terminated when she got this money. How long before she can receive benefits again?

Hi,

Receiving an inheritance would not cause Social Security disability (SSDI) or any other type of Social Security benefits to be terminated. Therefore, I can only assume that what your aunt was getting was Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is a needs based benefit administered by the Social Security Administration, but it is not funded by Social . . . Read More

Will it effect my SSDI since not earned actual income? Basically can you get Unemployment & SSDI at the same time and is there a Cap with . . . Read More

What Happens To My SS Benefits If I Win The Lottery?

What happens to my SS benefits if I happen to win the lottery or something like that.

Hi,

Social Security benefits aren't needs based, so lottery winnings would have no adverse effect on your benefits. Lottery winnings are not considered to be earned income, so they would also not count for purposes of Social Security's earnings test (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/whileworking.html).

Can I Draw Spousal Benefits In Addition To My Own Benefits?

I am turning 62 in Feb and plan on collecting SS. It's not much, $871 per month. My husband will only be 60 in Feb. Can I also draw spousal SS?
THANKS,
Katy

Hi Katy,

You couldn't draw spousal benefits at least until your husband starts drawing his benefits. And, even then, you'll only qualify for spousal benefits in addition to your own benefits if 50% of your husband's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than your own PIA. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing at full . . . Read More
