Am I Forced To Sign Up For Medicare When I File For Divorced Spousal Benefits?
Dear Larry
I am 67 and past FRA. I meet all the criteria for Divorced Spousal benefits and have started the SSI paperwork. I am still working and do not need Medicare as I am covered by my employer. Am I forced to sign up for Medicare when I submit the claim for divorced spousal benefits? I can not find the answer anywhere.
Thanks for considering
Hi,
The only part of Medicare that you'll be forced to file for if you apply for benefits is Part A. Part A coverage is free for people who qualify for monthly Social Security benefits, so it . . . Read More

How Can I Apply For Benefits If I Can't File Online?
Larry, I reach 70 in a few months and need to file for Social Security under my own record, having delayed my benefit to receive maximum DRCs. I am currently receiving spousal benefits only. I understood from a previous question that I can’t apply online, and must either apply in person or by phone. Do you have any information about how those of us who must call to apply are faring during the COVID-19 pandemic? Any words of advice on how to ensure this goes smoothly? Thanks for the great advice that is enabling us to increase our income in our later years.

Hi,
I'm sorry, but my expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, so I'm unable to answer questions about stimulus payments.
The IRS website has posted the following information about stimulus payments: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/economic-impact-payments-what-you-need-to-know.

When Can I Possibly Start To Receive Any Ex-Spousal Benefits?
Hello,
I am 60 yrs old currently receiving SS Disability and wanted find out if I am eligible for Social Security Benefits although my ex husband hasn’t retired yet and is still working at 68. When can I possibly start to receive any ex-spousal benefits? We were married 6 yrs. Am I eligible for anything and if so do wait until he actually retires?
Thank you
Hi
You'd have to be at least age 62 to potentially be eligible for divorced spousal benefits, and your ex would either have to be drawing his benefits or be at least age 62. Even then . . . Read More

Is What Social Security Told Me About My Medicare Premium Rate Correct?
I will turn 65 this month and am now on Medicare. Since my Medicare Part B premiums (medical and prescription drugs) are deducted from my monthly Social Security benefit, my monthly benefit has now decreased due to the $144.60 being deducted for my Part B.
I was recently informed that due to my income in 2018, an additional $70 ($57.80 medical plus $12.20 prescription) would be deducted from my monthly SS benefit due to my income in 2018. My father passed away that year and my income increased due to an inheritance I received. Based on my 2018 income, I now am paying a . . . Read More

What Do I Need To Do To Continue Getting My Social Security Payments?
I lost my checkbook with my Account Information. How can I get redo my account information to continue getting my monthly Social Security check by the 4th Wednesday of the month?
Hi,
Losing your checkbook wouldn't affect your Social Security payments as long as you don't close your bank account. Ideally you don't want to close the bank account where your Social Security payments are directly deposited until your benefits have started going to a different account. If you do close your account and the bank receives a direct deposit to the closed . . . Read More

Can I Receive Survivor Benefits While My Children Are Young and Still Receive Benefits At Retirement?
My husband passed away at age 41 and I am the same age. We have three children under the age of 18 and am wondering what my options are for receiving social security benefits. I was told that I could collect survivor benefits for the three children as well as myself.
1) If I collect the survivor benefits now, does that impact what I am able to collect at retirement from my husband's social security record (he made more money than I did)?
2) If I find a job that puts me above range for collecting survivor social security, could I restart the survivor benefits if I . . . Read More
