What Would You Recommend In My Situation?

Hi Larry,
I’ve just turned 65, I was employed as a server but now with the virus sweeping the globe, I, like many others, am now unemployed. I’m skeptical about my chances of finding another job where I make what I’ve been making due to my age and the current situation which will have some long term effects. My FRA is 66 yrs and 2 months. I made just over 50,000 last year but that’s my highest recorded earnings ever. My benefit at 70 is based on my continuing to make 31000 a year and I don’t believe that is on the table any longer. What would you recommend? Maybe waiting . . . Read More

Why Can't My Wife And I Both File Online?

My wife, born 12/3/50, filed for benefits at FRA. I turn 66 in Oct, 6 months from now and plan on filing when I reach FRA. From looking at the website, it appears she can not file for spousal benefits on line since she is already receiving her benefits. Is this correct? If so, why can’t we both use an on line application?

Hi,

You'll have to ask Social Security that question, but apparently their online systems aren't prepared to handle the processing of spousal claims filed after a person is already drawing their own benefits. Social Security's . . . Read More

Can You Collect Unemployment If You Receive SS Benefits And A Pension?

Hi, Did not know you were able to collect SS and unemployment. My question is, can you collect unemployment if you receive SS and a pension. Thank you.

Hi,

My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, so all that I can tell you is that you can be paid Social Security benefits regardless of whether or not you're drawing unemployment. Unemployment benefits do not count toward the Social Security earnings test limits (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/whileworking.html). . . . Read More

If I Went Back To Work in Order To Help Out With The Coronavirus, Would It Affect My Disability Benefits?

I am on Social Security Disability I'm a retired respiratory therapist since 2012 and I was wanting to ask if I went back to work to help out with the coronavirus would that affect my disability

Hi,

I admire your willingness to want to use your skills to help out with the current health crisis, but Congress hasn't passed any exceptions to the normal rules regarding the limit on earnings for people who receive Social Security disability benefits (SSDI). If you return to work and you earn more than the amount that Social Security considers to be ' . . . Read More

Can I Temporarily File For Social Security And Then Stop The Payments When I Resume Work?

Hello Larry I am just over 62 1/2 years old and eligible for SS.
I was working full time but was furloughed due to Covid-19 social distancing rules. I will return to my full time job when this horrible plague changes the social distancing regulations.
I am eligible for unemployment and will also receive the care act funds.

My question's are can I temporally file for social security during this down time and then stop the payments after resuming my full time job? Is there any downside to this thinking?

Is It True That I Can Apply For Half Of My Wife's Benefits Without Hindering The Growth Of My Benefit?

My wife just turned 67 and filed for retirement benefits. I will turn 67 on 02-12-2021. I am under the belief that I can apply for limited benefits, up one-half of my wife's total benefit without hindering the growth in my full benefit between my 67th and 70th birthday, the latter being my targeted retirement age. Is that true and, if so, what the guidelines, protocols, and caveats attached to this? Thanks!!

Hi,

No, that's not true. Since you were apparently born after January 1 1954 you could not file just for spousal benefits without also being . . . Read More
