Dear Larry. I lived and worked in the US for 22 years paying taxes and Social Security. I was never able to legalize my status. In 2004 I came back to my country (Chile) after I lost all appeals to become a legal citizen. I started my retirement in January of this year through the offices of the SSA in Argentina. Everything was going well until I was sent an email communicating that I need to check my status with Home Land Security in the US before I could proceed. Would you please help me find the right offices that I need to contact in the US and how?

I'm 70 years old and single. I collected Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) until I reached 65 years old, when my benefits automatically converted to regular Social Security (SSA) benefits. There was no change in the benefit amount.

My husband 72, and I 66 both are drawing SS. Our disabled adult daughter is drawing on her Dad’s SS, SSDI. We are entitled dual citizenship to Italy. Contemplating on exercising this right but retaining US citizenship. Will the three of us continue to receive our SS and SSDI Checks? We would like to live in Italy for a time.

You are the second person today that's mentioned receiving an extra payment. I have no idea why you may have been paid extra this month, but this is roughly the time of year that Social Security processes automated earnings recomputations. So, if you had earnings last year that were high enough to increase your benefit rate, that may explain the extra payment.

Why did I receive an extra payment of Social security after I turned 70?

I can't even make a guess without more information. If you were already drawing benefits before turning age 70, the act of reaching age 70 wouldn't make you eligible for an extra payment from Social Security or an increase in your benefit rate.

I would like to retire at age 62 and buy 5 years and start collecting SS payments for my full retirement age of 66 and 8 months. Employees who work in school systems around the country can do this so why doesn't SSA allow this?

You can't be paid Social Security benefits if you're convicted of a crime and sent to jail or prison for more than 30 days. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits can't be paid for any length of time that you spend in jail. I'm don't know which type of benefit you are referring to.

I am on SSDI and work part-time. My FRA will be May 2021.If I can still continue working , do I contact Social Security or does my SSDI convert automatically to a retirement check?

As long as you continue to qualify for Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits until you reach full retirement age (FRA), your SSDI will automatically convert to regular retirement benefits effective with the month you reach FRA.
