My wife is a German citizen and her green card expired. We have been married since Sept. 9, 1980. We live together in Germany since my retirement from the US Army. I am 68 years old and she is 66 years old now. Does she qualify for half of my Social Security even if she has never been employed in the US since we were married? She is collecting health care and a retirement benefits from Germany.
Will the SSA automatically take out a Medicare payment from her benefit?
Thanks for your help!
Larry I will be 66 on Feb 1st and have been collecting my own SS for 1 year (Feb 2022). My husband is 66 and collects his SS Can I collect spousal benefit at my FRA (66 & 6 months). And if I can what percentage? It’s all so confusing to me. Thanks June
Hi Larry. I am someway confused and need some help . My husband of 40+ years filed for divorce. He was born latter part of 1954 and I was born in 1958.
I will spare you the drastic details as it really has no bearing on your answers. It’s a circus more or less, and it appears my spouse is determined to leave me with nothing whether it be possessions or any income. I honestly don’t have a clue as to why but nonetheless it’s the case.
I am 65 (1956), my husband has been collecting SS since he turned 70 (1948). Will I receive full 50% of spousal benefit now or do I have to be 66 +months to receive the full 50% benefit?
Larry, I’m the primary wage earner. If I take my SS benefits at 62 how does this impact why wife’s spousal benefit. Will she get 50% of my reduced amount or if she waits until shes70 will she get 50% of what my benefit would have been if I waited until 70?
I am considering retiring this January at 66 years and 6 months, My wife who is 63 started taking her benefit at 62. My benefit would pay$2644, She currently gets $679 for the past 11 months. Will she get a higher payment once I retire? If so,how much??
Sincerely
Kelly
Hello,
I was looking at the question before this page. Person wanted to know if wife's benefit is based on husbands's PIA at FRA or is based on the COLA affected amount if amount is higher when the wife applies 2 years later for benefits on husband. The answer I saw looks like the wife would receive a higher benefit based on the husband's current benefit with COLA,.
I think it should be based solely on the PIA at FRA or 66 years and 6 months of the husband in the example. Thank you
My new wife was collecting spousal benefits on her divorced husband we were recently married how long must she wait before she can collect on my benefits which are higher
Hello and happy new year. We have purchased an annual subscription to Maximize my Social Security but wanted to clarify our understanding before my wife files for her own SS benefit. My wife will be 62 in March (born 1960), she has own earnings from employment and qualifies for $525/month (PIA=$746).. If she claims her own SS benefit at 62 will it affect her spousal benefit when I claim my own SS in 2030 (when I turn 70, born 1960) and she claims spousal benefit at same time?
Results will differ based on your specific case and filing strategy.
