Can I Collect My Ex-Spouse's Social Security Even If He's Only Age 56 And Hasn't Applied For Benefits?

I want to retire at 65 in march 2022..I am divorced. Was married from 1993-2016. My ex is 8 yrs younger making him 56 yrs old now. Will I be able to collect his social security even though he has not applied for his own being he is not at retirement age?

Hi. No. As long as your ex-spouse is still living, the only way that you could potentially qualify for divorced spousal benefits is if your ex is either at least age 62, or if he's drawing Social Security retirement or disability benefits.

Am I Able To Draw SS On My First Husband After A Period Of Time After Divorcing My Second Husband?

Hi Larry, I'm 62 and in process of getting a divorce. This is my second (and last!) marriage. My question is- am I able to draw SS on my first husband after a period of time post divorce? My SS will only be $900 a month but I will probably start soon because I'm having medical issues but from what I've heard, it may be possible to transition to his later on. We were married 11 years. I've only been legally married to my current husband for 4 years although we've lived together for nine.
Hope you can clarify this for me!

Can I Earn Delayed Retirement Credits On My Railroad Retirement While I'm Collecting Social Security?

I am eligible for railroad retirement benefits and social security benefits. I will reach FRA in May 2022. Two customer service officials at the Railroad Retirement Board suggested I file at the SSA for social security benefits when I reach my FRA, make it clear to the SSA that I am not filing for railroad retirement benefits, collect social security benefits until I reach age 70, then stop them and start my railroad retirement benefits. Both officials were certain I would earn Delayed Retirement Credits on my railroad retirement while I was collecting social security benefits . . . Read More

Can I Lose My SSDI Benefits If I Start Working Part-Time?

Hi there, Can I lose my SSDI benefits if I start working part-time and have a disability from depression, but currently stable. I would like to work at least 15 works a week. I am just 43 years old and I graduated from college.

Hi. You could lose your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits if you either work and earn too much to be considered as disabled, or if Social Security does a medical review and decides that your impairment is no longer considered disabling.

SSDI benefits don't stop due to a person's earnings unless they earn above the . . . Read More

What Will Happen If I Go Over The $2000 Threshold?

I have SSI and my crypto asset is about to hit $2000. I'm told because i benefit from SSI i cannot pass the $2000 threshold. What will happen if I do? Will they take it away immediately and make me pay back? What should I do?

Hi. Your countable assets do need to be no more than $2000 in order for you to be able to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. Social Security would need to suspend your payments if and when the value of your countable assets exceed that amount. However, you would not have to repay the SSI payments you received . . . Can I Draw Social Security On My Husband?

I will be turning 65 in February and want to know if I can draw Social Security on my husband? He is still living....I have been disabled all my life due to 3 automobile accidents. I’ve never felt sorry for myself. Thank You

Hi. Assuming that you're still married to your husband, you could only qualify for spousal benefits if your husband is drawing Social Security retirement or disability benefits and if his primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than twice as much as your own PIA. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate . . . Read More

Can I Apply For Spousal Benefits?

Hi Larry, this SS issue has me a bit confused. My wife is currently 61 and is no longer working. She worked for the State of Kansas for over 25 years. I am soon to be 65 and play on retiring in when I'm 66 & 6 months my FRA. Not sure what our options are but was curious if any of the following can be applicable.
1) My wife starts collecting her SS benefits at age 62 (2022). Her benefits would be approximately $1,000 per month.
2) Can I apply for spousal benefits under her SS benefits??
3) If I can what effect would that have on my collecting my benefits at . . . Read More
