If My Wife Dies Am I Able To Collect Her Benefits?

If my wife dies is her husband able to collect her benefits like she would if I passed

Hi. The rules for paying survivor benefits is the same for both husbands and wives (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html). The surviving member of a couple can be paid up to the higher of their two benefit rates. They can't be paid both benefits, though, just the higher of the two benefit rates. So, assuming that both you and your wife are collecting . . . Read More

Would My Disability Social Security Change To Social Security After I Turn Age 62?

If I draw disability social security will I change to social security after I turn 62?

Hi. Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits when a person reaches their full retirement age (FRA), not at age 62. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is age 67.

Best, Jerry

Would I Be Eligible For Any SS Payment Now?

Ok my husband was on disability when he passed at 64. I have type 2 diabetic and I'm going to be 46 this month would I be able to any sos payment now?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. The only way that you could qualify for benefits from your husband's account prior to age 50 is if you have a child in your care who's eligible for benefits on your husband's account and if the child is either under age 16 or is disabled (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0415. . . . Will Social Security Recalculate My Benefit Rate Since I'm Earning More Now Than I Did In In Some Of The Years They Used To Calculate My Current Rate?

I delayed drawing my SS until age 70. I have continued to work an would like to know if they will recalculate my 35 years to include my wages now. I earn. much more than some of the years they calculated my rate on. Hope you can help with this as I get different answers from SS. Thanks, Carol

Hi Carol. The short answer is yes, Social Security should recalculate your benefit rate whenever you earn more in a year than you did in one of your previous highest 35 years of wage-indexed earnings. Social Security retirement benefits are calculated based on the . . . Read More

Will I Lose Some Of My Social Security If I Get Married?

Hi I'm 68 my fiance is 67 if we go ahead and get married will I loose some of my social security to him he gets about half of what I get.

Hi. I assume you mean that you receive Social Security retirement benefits based on your own earnings history. In that case the answer is no, getting married wouldn't have any adverse effect on your benefits.

Furthermore, if your new spouse's primary insurance amount (PIA) is less than 50% of your PIA, then he may be able to qualify for spousal benefits if you marry. A person's PIA is equal to their Social . . . Read More

Would It Be Advantageous For Me To Apply For SSDI Benefits If I'm Already Receiving Survivor Benefits?

Aloha Larry,
My husband of 28 years, passed away in 2015. I resigned my work after TDI, as my medical condition was not expected to improve for several months. I turned 62 in Feb of this year, 2022, but had applied for Survivor's benefit and am now receiving this benefit. I have many medical conditions, and was advised before receiving The Widow's survivor's benefit, that my medical conditions would qualify me for SSDI. I did not apply for this first, as I had wanted to try to return to my professional career. My question is: would there be an advantage to apply for the . . . Read More

Can My Wife Receive Half Of My SSI Amount When She Turns 62?

I started receiving my SSI income last October at age 63 and pension from my Federal service. I remarried in July of 2020 to my current wife who was a homemaker for 32 years and never worked, can she receive half of my SSI amount when she turns 62 next year?

Hi. When you refer to SSI, I assume you mean Social Security retirement benefits and not Supplemental Security Income. If you're collecting Social Security retirement benefits then your spouse could potentially qualify for spousal benefits on your account as early as age 62. However, the amount wouldn . . . Am I Entitled To Any Of My Deceased Ex-Husband's SS?

My ex husband and I were married and divorced 1986. We lived together for three more years later on without remarrying. He passed away five years ago. Am I entitled to any S.S. benefits of his? I never remarried and receive my own S. S.

Hi. No. If you weren't married to your spouse at the time of his death, you would need to have been married to him for at least 10 years in order to potentially qualify for survivor benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/ . . . Read More

I was born in February 1956 I've been divorced now for 30 years can I can I collect my husband's Social security. he was born in 1955 Even if hes still working

Hi. Since you've been divorced for more than 2 years and since you and your ex-spouse are both at least age 62, you could potentially qualify for divorced spousal benefits as long as you're currently unmarried, you were married to your ex for at least 10 years, and if your own primary insurance amount (PIA) is less than 50% of your ex-spouse's PIA. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security . . . Read More

Do I Need To Do Something To Have Part B Medicare Premiums Withheld From My Benefits?

I started receiving social security this month August. I have already been on Medicare and paid my part B premium quarterly. When I got my Ssa payment, my part b premium was not deducted as expected. What do I need to do to get it automatically deducted, or will it just start to deduct when the amounts I have already paid are used up? I don’t want to be delinquent in making a payment, but don’t want to pay any further premiums if the are going to start automatically at some point. Is there something I need to do?
