Is It True That I Can Collect Up To Half Of My Husband's Benefit Now Before He Starts Collecting?

My husband and I are both planning on waiting until we are 70 to collect SS. I was told that I could be collecting up to half of his benefit now before he starts collecting and it won’t impact his future benefits. He turns 70 in April, 2023. I turn 70 in 2025. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Hi. What you were told is incorrect. First of all, your husband would have to be collecting his benefits in order for you to claim spousal benefits. More importantly, though, since you were born after January 1 1954 you could never claim spousal benefits . . . Read More

Can I Claim My Deceased Mother's Benefits?

My mother m passed away of I remember correctly it was in March of 2004. Can I cla her benefits. I'm just curious?.

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. You can't claim a deceased parent's actual monthly benefits, nor can you claim a refund of any Social Security taxes that were paid by a deceased parent. The only way that you could receive anything based on a deceased parent's contributions to Social Security is if you qualify for surviving child benefits. To potentially qualify for surviving child benefits, you would need to be unrmarried and be either under . . . Read More

Do I Need To Apply For Early Social Security Retirement If I Leave SSDI?

do I need to apply for early retirement on social security retirement if I leave ssdi insurance

Hi. You aren't required to apply for Social Security retirement benefits if your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits are terminated prior to your full retirement age (FRA). If you are entitled to SSDI benefits and if that entitlement continues until the month you reach FRA, your SSDI benefits automatically convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits. But, if your SSDI benefits are terminated due to work or medical improvement prior to the . . . Read More

Can You Explain How The COLA Affects The Family Maximum Benefit?

Hi Larry, I apologize if this question has been asked before. I looked for it in the asked questions and didn’t see it. Can you explain how the COLA affects the family maximum benefit?

On a separate note, I read where there may be a $200 increase for recipients instead this year. . Have you also heard this? You are always so helpful. Thank you so much.

Hi. Social Security cost of living (COLA) increases are applied to family maximum benefit (FMB) rates at the same percentage as the COLAs applied to individual benefit rates. So, if several . . . Read More

Is There A Limit On How Much You Can Make Working Part-Time While On Social Security?

Hi, Is there a limit to how much you can make working a part time job while on social security?

Hi. Yes, but only if you haven't yet reached your full retirement age (FRA)(https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/cfr20/404/404-0409.htm). In 2022, people who are below FRA can only earn up to $19,560 without potentially losing at least some of their benefits, although people reaching FRA this year can earn more without losing benefits. Will I Be Given My Husband's SSDI Now That He's Passed?

My husband started getting SSDI in 2018 at the age of 58. He just passed away in June age 60. I’m age 61. I was also declared disabled in 2020. I didn’t pay much into social security because I was mostly a stay at home mom for 38 years. Will I be granted his SSDI now that he’s passed. Social Security doesn’t tell me anything until my phone appointment I’ve got coming up at the end of this month. I still have bills to pay but no income and wondering if I need to get a job.

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Since you are over age 60, being disabled isn't a . . . Read More

How Do I Go About Switching My Widow's Benefits To Retirement Benefits For My Husband?

I am drawing Widows benefits & I'm disabled, my husband was disabled as well He will be turning 62 in January, how do I go about switching my Widows benefits to retirement benefits for him?

Hi. I'm not sure that I understand your situation. If you're collecting widow's benefits on the record of a former spouse and if you subsequently remarried, you could potentially apply for benefits as a spouse on your current husband's account. Whether or not that would be advisable depends on many variables that aren't mentioned in your question. I would suggest . . . Read More

If I Change My Name To My Married Name WIll It Affect My Husband's SSI?

If I wanted to change my name to my married name, would this effect my husband ssi?

Hi. No, the act of changing your name wouldn't affect your husband's Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment. However, getting married can affect a person's SSI, depending on their living arrangements and their spouse's income and resources.

Should I Apply For Disability Benefits Even If I'm Still Working?

I will be 62 at the end of this year and plan to take my Social Security retirement at this time. I have been diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension earlier this year. I have been considering applying for Disability, but don't feel I would qualify because of my income per month. I am single and am the only source of income, so I have to work, but have many absences. My question is: should I put an application in for Disability first and then wait for SSA to respond and then put in my application for retiring at 62. I read that if you take retirement and then become disabled your . . . Read More
