Hello Professor Kotlikoff,
You are recognized as an expert in Social Security, and I intend to order your book on this subject and have a question for you that I am hoping you will answer :
I am 68 and half years old. I'm gainfully employed and making $140,000 a year.. I am not collecting social security currently. Each.year I have worked in the last 40 years I have reached nearly or exceeded my social security taxes that were taken with the payroll taxes. I want to continue working until at least age 70 years old. I want to apply for security benefits now and receive benefits for 12 months and suspend the benefits until I turn 70 years old..
Hi Larry, can I collect my own social security at 62 then switch to my late husband’s survivors benefits at my full retirement age?
Hi. Possibly. You can claim your own Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, but if you're still working then some or all of your benefits might need to be withheld if you earn too much (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/whileworking.html).
My sister-in law is 66 and her 80-year-old husband just died. He was collecting retirement benefits, but she never filed for her retirement. She wants to collect a widow's benefit, but she still needs to work full time. Is there a limit to what she can earn? Can she go back and collect retroactively to when he was still alive and prior to his death?
I'm 66 on full Social Security after being on SSDI for 10 years my wife is 63 almost 64 and still working is she able to draw 50% of my Social Security benefits so she can wait for her Social Security to mature at 67? I have heard it is possible and if so how can she file for half my SS while still working until her SS matures at 67 so not to draw early and lose 1/3 of he lifetime benefits. Is there a form she can do online to file for 50% of my SS benefits I now draw. Help!
I was 57 when my husband died at age 62 (did not claim Soc Sec). Can I claim early social Security benefits at 62 on my own record and then switch at my full retirement age to 100% survivor benefits from my husband‘s record?
Hello Larry !!
i will turn 62 ......this october 2022
can i collect my early ( 62 ) social security
and then....
when i become FRA 67
can i switch over and collect my deceased husband spousal benefit social security ?
i never made much money
i am believing that his would grow if i wait ... untill i am FRA 67
one more question....
i do not know if he started taking his social security early... would this make a difference ?
Hello, My wife is 63 and she started her SS at 62. I am also 63 and I am waiting until 66 10 months to take mine (I have the larger amount and hers is more than 1/2 of mine). My question is if something was to happen to me before I reach FRA, say at 65. Can my wife continue to collect her SS until I would have reached FRA and then switch over to the amount I would receive at FRA and give hers up? (note she is 4 months older than me so she would have already reached her FRA). Thank you for your time.
Can I sign up for SS benefits today 3.30.22 but start them on 4.14.22? Will these 2 weeks impact the dollar amount I receive?
Results will differ based on your specific case and filing strategy.
